The Gastric Sleeve consists of a laparoscopic surgery with the help of a self-suturing machine. A resection of the most distensible part of the stomach is performed, leaving it smaller (25%-30%) thin and tubular. This surgery offers results related to weight loss, improving associated diseases (diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, joint pain and damage, and low self-esteem, among others). Gastric bypass is a type of bariatric surgery in which a 30 to 50 ml small stomach is left, which is directly connected to the small intestine and thereby decreases the absorption of calories and nutrients. A smaller stomach causes you to feel full with less food intake, causing weight loss. Candidates for this procedure are those with morbid obesity (BMI greater than 40) with type 2 diabetes that is difficult to control or severe gastroesophageal reflux. This bariatric procedure is a good alternative when patients are not candidates for the gastric sleeve.
